Naturalistic Ecomuseum
The Naturalistic Ecomuseum was born with the aim of enhancing the great naturalistic, historical and archaeological heritage of Mount Tiriolo. The structure, a tall and thin building having the shape of a tower, is surrounded by the remains of the ancient Byzantine fortified citadel and of a Medieval church. At its foot, there is Sentiero Italia (“Italy pathway”), an excursion trail of about 6,000 kilometres of length, running along the entire national territory; following the path, it is possible to cross the ridges of the mount northwards and then go down on the wooded hills behind the rocky massif.
The tower hosting the visitor centre is located on the top of the mount, inside a historical building constructed at the end of XIX century as a meteorological observatory, functioning until the 1920s. The building was once recovered in 1922 and used as an astronomical observatory. After that, in 2015 it was completely restores and rearranged to host the museum. It is composed of two rooms used as exhibition areas at ground floor and of an educational and multimedia area at first floor. The upper terraces are kind of a viewpoint and used as a point of observation of birdlife. The vault built in the “caruselli” style (empty brickwork elements in the shape of truncated cones) is particularly relevant and well preserved, still visible at ground floor.
